Internal Audit and the CFO

Session Overview:
Session overview This meeting will focus on the relationship between internal audit and the CFO. The format of the session will be Q&A where Steve will talk about his experience as CFO in a demanding environment. The session will highlight what expectations CFO's generally have of internal audit and identify key areas for promoting the relationship between internal audit and CFO.

Speaker: Steve Wearn
Steve is a Director and strategic advisor with Callida Consulting in a range of management areas. He is also the Managing Director of 'The Leadership and Management Team', a company providing Executive coaching and advisory services on leadership and management.

Previously, Steve held a variety of Senior Executive Service level positions in the Australian Public Service up to Deputy Secretary level, such as:

  • First Assistant Secretary, Budgets and Financial Performance -Department of Defence
  • Assistant Secretary Planning and Budgeting - Department of Defence
  • Assistant Secretary Resource Analysis and Performance - Department of Defence

For a number of years Steve also held the position of CFO at the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO). DMO was one of the largest (non-administered) Commonwealth Agencies that had the responsibility of procuring, maintaining and then disposing of all of the military equipment and support services for the Australian Defence Force. The equipment procured was some of the most complex in Australia and represents interesting challenges for a CFO in terms of cash flow management, multiple revenue streams and accounting treatments in a Commonwealth context. The CFO DMO role was described by the ANAO as one the most challenging CFO roles in the Commonwealth from a financial management, auditing and accounting perspective.

Steve has extensive experience and highly regarded in the fields of financial management, governance, HRM, program management and reform development and implementation. His experience and knowledge as a senior leader gives him the insight to look at issues from multiple perspectives and engage positively with Boards, management, staff and the general public. He is considered a strategic thinker with particular experience in assisting organisations in developing solutions to tackle organisational change, business improvement initiatives and governance matters.
