CEO Update – December 2023

Trish Hyde, CEO, IIA-Australia

Hello and welcome to this week’s News Update. When asked to pen a brief note for this edition, I jumped at the opportunity to share a little about the exciting plans IIA has for 2024.

As the newly appointed CEO for IIA-Australia, I believe I have come on board at a transformative time for the profession.

Globally, trust in organisations (corporate and government) is being chipped away by revelation after revelation of behaviour that the community finds wanting. Whether you call it social capital, licence to operate or sales revenue, an organisation’s reputation is easily tarnished in today’s highly critical and instant media world.

Having started my career in corporate comms and marketing in highly regulated and issues rich environments, I know that the best reputation defence is good offence. This is where I see the growing importance of the GRC professional. Whether Line 3 or Line 2, internal audit and GRC professionals are an organisation’s best defence from damaging public scandal – prevention is better than the cure (or a televised public apologies).

As your professional body, we see a great opportunity to provide the tools, learning avenues and networking to support you, your peers and the next generation across functions.

Tools – Technical content is one of cornerstones of IIA membership value.  With a mindset of curiosity and rigour, we will continue to bring you the tools and resources you need. From broadening our governance, risk and compliance content base to everything you need to know about the new IIA Global Internal Audit Standards, the Code of Conduct and the revised ASX Corporate Governance Council Principles and Recommendations, to bespoke technical services, we aim to be the ‘secret weapon’ behind your success.

Learning – A learning mindset is recognised as critical for success in today’s complex world. IIA has always focused on providing members a variety of learning options suited to the technical and soft skill needs of internal audit. Now, we are embarking on a more comprehensive approach that will expand our offering to different career stages in micro learning pieces and with milestone recognition.

Networking – At the heart of any membership association is the invaluable collegial network. A strong professional peer network can offer support in challenging times and membership gives an opportunity to help others. It takes a village to elevate the profession’s standing.

Stay tuned for our announcement of the new Global Internal Audit Standards. We will have a member-only webinar debrief within days of the launch, so that you can be one of the first to know.

It is an absolute honour to be part of the IIA team. As an advocate of the value of the profession and professional associations, I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the coming year. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us if you need anything.

If you are heading off early, have a happy and safe holiday, and we’ll see you in the New Year.
