IIA-Australia Who We Are

IIA empowers internal auditors, risk managers and assurance practitioners to accelerate their value and impact — on their career, on their organisation, and on their profession.

IIA-Australia

IIA-Australia is both an Australian membership body representing 3,000 governance, risk and assurance professionals and part of the global network of over 260,000 professionals in more than 100 countries, united under the global IIA Inc. umbrella. In short, we are both local and global.

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) was established in 1941, with IIA in Australia starting in 1952. The IIA is the internal audit profession's leader in standards, certification, education, research, and technical guidance throughout the world. Our members work in internal auditing, risk management, governance, internal control, information technology audit, education, and security.

As the pre-eminent professional body for internal auditing, and in recognition of the global trend for governance and risk professionals to work in unison for their organisations, IIA-Australia is the champion of Governance, Risk and Controls Assurance (GRC) professionals.

Our purpose is to be the centre for knowledge, collaboration and recognition for the profession, delivering advocacy, career learning, support and tools for members to achieve, as well as education for broader stakeholders.

We do this by:

  • Developing the knowledge base about and for the internal audit and wider GRC profession
  • Fostering member collaboration in forums, networks and think tanks
  • Championing the public recognition of professionals
  • Advocating on matters of interest to the profession to shape our nation’s corporate and legal environment and promote the understanding of the 3 Lines Model of Governance Assurance within the business and public sector
  • Providing cutting-edge GRA specific and peer-developed education
  • Supporting members with the tools and services they need to excel personally and professionally in their careers and to be able to give back to the community as a whole
  • Upholding the IPPF and in particular the IIA Standards

In our operations we will champion the profession, uphold the profession's values - integrity, objectivity, confidentiality and competency - foster collegiality and be a trusted ally for members, stakeholders and the public.

What is Internal Audit

As an internal auditor, I give advice to executives and Boards to help them make better decisions. I do this by taking an independent view of how the different parts of an organisation operate and reporting this back to the decision makers. The main things I look for are what is working well, how the organisation can be more efficient; and how to strengthen processes, procedures and controls to respond to risks.
