IA-Australia’s evolving Competency Framework brings together key knowledge areas, learning experiences, and technical resources to help you:

This approach creates a structured, scalable way to develop critical capabilities for a constantly changing profession. Whether you're a new internal auditor, a CAE, or a governance specialist, the framework is designed to meet you where you are—and take you further.

Each core competency is defined at three progressive levels to support structured development:

Core 1: Applies Concepts

You understand the competency and can apply it in familiar situations with guidance. This is the foundation for developing your professional judgement and confidence.>

Core 2: Applies Independently in Practice

You consistently apply this competency in your work, adapting it across a range of scenarios. You demonstrate autonomy, reliability, and sound interpretation in complex settings.

Core 3: Integrates and Leads

You integrate this competency across functions and teams. You coach others, innovate new practices, or embed the competency in organisational systems or strategic processes.
