Health care credentialing is the formal process used by a health service organisation to verify the qualifications, experience, professional standing, competencies and other relevant professional attributes of clinicians, so that the organisation can form a view about the clinician’s competence, performance and professional suitability to provide safe, high-quality health care services within specific organisational environments.

Key Points

1. To be effective and safe, clinical practice must have strong controls, together with complementary assurance activities to independently validate controls are effective.

2. The idea behind credentialing is to improve patient safety by having a regime for health care practitioners to practice within the boundary of their training and competency, and within the capacity of the service in which they are working.

3. Credentialing is part of the wider health care organisation quality and risk management system primarily designed to protect patients.
