Internal audit is a dynamic profession involved in helping organisations achieve their objectives. It is concerned with evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes in an organisation.

The IIA-Australia is the leading body representing internal auditors.

The Professional Certificate in Integrated Assurance (ProCertIA) is an industry-endorsed professional development program designed for professionals who want to establish or grow a career in internal audit, governance, risk and controls assurance (Integrated Assurance). It blends theoretical knowledge with practical application in real-world context.

This program is ideal for:

  • Internal audit, risk, and assurance professionals wanting to strengthen their skills,

  • Practitioners seeking deeper knowledge of the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF) including Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS) and Topical Requirements,

  • Individuals aiming to apply for professional membership with IIA-Australia, and

  • Organisations looking to build capability in assurance and Three Lines effectiveness.

Yes — there are no formal prerequisites for entry. All that is required is access to a computer and the internet. However, having relevant work experience is recommended to get the most out of the course.

The ProCertIA consists of four modules. While typical completion is around one year, candidates may take up to two years to finish all modules.

The program has four key modules:

  • Foundations of Internal Audit — core concepts, Three Lines Model and IPPF fundamentals,
  • Legal and Regulatory Environment — legal, regulatory, ethical, and societal frameworks,
  • Organisational Systems and Processes — organisational functions and how they relate to audit and assurance, and
  • Professional in Practice — capstone practical project applying all learning.

Each module is made up of a bundle of microcredentials (training course + assessment). These microcredentials break the content into focused learning units, allowing candidates to progress through theory, practical application, and assessment in manageable stages. All microcredentials within a module must be completed to achieve full module completion.

The Professional in Practice module requires candidates to complete a major project — either a real workplace audit, a structured simulation, or a thematic assurance review — supported by a workplace supervisor or IIA-Australia mentor. This project demonstrates end-to-end capability.

Yes. All modules are delivered via Zoom or self-paced using a learning platform (Moodle), with activities, readings and discussion forums to guide learning.

Yes. Each module is made up of a bundle of Microcredentials (a learning product + an assessment). Once you complete the learning for the topic, the participant will be assessed on the competency of the topic to gain the microcredential. The assessment can be an activity completion, quiz or an interview with the assessor.

If you have completed any of the training courses listed under the Modules under the new standards, you only need to complete the associated assessments to receive the microcredential.

Upon completion of all four modules, candidates are awarded the Professional Certificate in Integrated Assurance (ProCertIA) Credly badge and a Statement of Attainment Certificate. This demonstrates advanced capability in internal audit, risk and assurance practice.

Yes. Completion of a professional education program recognised by IIA-Australia assists in eligibility for Professional Member (PMIIA) status.

Fees vary depending on membership status. (Refer to the current page content for member vs non-member fees — e.g., $2700 per module for members; $3100 for non-members.)
