What is Internal Audit?

Internal audit is a dynamic profession involved in helping organisations achieve their objectives. It is concerned with evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes in an organisation.

Internal audit is the process of evaluating the procedures and policies within an organisation to identify potential risks and enhance good governance.

By remaining independent of management, internal audit provides objective, unbiased, evidence-based recommendations to management and the Board, facilitating fully informed decision-making.

Internal audit is a globally recognised profession supported by professional standards and a code of conduct. Education and learning opportunities include completing the IIA-Australia Graduate Certificate in Internal Auditing (GradCertIA) postgraduate qualification or the IIA Global Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) certification. A comprehensive professional development program is also offered.

Internal Audit Elevator Pitch

As an internal auditor, I give advice to executives and Boards to help them make better decisions. I do this by taking an independent view of how the different parts of an organisation operate and reporting this back to the decision makers. The main things I look for are what is working well, how the organisation can be more efficient; and how to strengthen processes, procedures and controls to respond to risks.
